It takes a real man to pull off all that purple.
In honor of Marvel Comic’s Master of Magnetism, I present this edible homage to his Purple Majesty’s battle-wear chain mail and silver rivets.
Magneto’s Purple Mutant Overlord Pie
Filling:
- 1 unbaked pie crust
- 3 lbs purple sweet potatoes (Ube)
- 4 tbsp butter, softened
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ginger
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ⅛ tsp allspice
- ⅛ tsp cloves
Topping:
- 12-16 dark “melting chocolate” discs
- 1 can edible silver mist
- 1 small tube black icing
- ½ cup cherry jam
Much like Erik Lensherr himself, purple Ube potatoes are neither as sweet nor as smooth as the more common orange sweet potatoes. They make up for it in fortifying fiber, stability, and let’s face it – glorious STYLE.
To preserve the rich purple color of your potatoes, you can’t boil them like a regular sweet potato. I chose to harness the power of the atom by microwaving mine for 9 minutes, turning every 3 minutes, until I could feel the soft flesh within submit to my will. You can also smear the skins with oil and bake them at 350F for 50-70 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of your potatoes.
If you boil them, the rich purple color will drain from the flesh, leaving it the washed out grey color of an exhausted Genoshan mutate.
Whether you baked or microwaved your potato, once it’s cooked through, slice it open and scoop out the glorious purple flesh within.
Immediately mash the purple sweet potato with 1 cup of whole milk and 4 tbsp softened butter. Once the fibrous flesh submits, add ½ cup white sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, and 4 eggs. Keep mashing the potatoes until they’re as sloppy as Magneto’s inconsistent writing.
While the color is deserving of his Purple and Magenta majesty, the flavor doesn’t live up to his spicy spirit. Drench the purple potato mash in your vanilla, cinnamon, salt, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. Beat it like a junior X-Team.
Roll out your favorite pie crust. You can purchase a refrigerated one, make a vegan or gluten free pie crust from scratch, or go old school with your favorite all-butter crust. Any pastry shell will do.
Spread your pie crust in a deep dish pan. Pour in your purple filling and bake the pie for 55-66 minutes, or until the center is just barely wobbly. (Ovens are notoriously inaccurate. Start checking around 50 minutes.)
Let your gloriously purple pie completely cool. While it does, prepare silver rivets for your master’s collar.
Wilton’s Candy Melts are the perfect size for your rivets. I chose to honor Magneto with chocolate as dark as his heart, but you’re welcome to use milk chocolate or white discs as pallid as his skin.
Regardless of what you choose, lay a dozen discs on a sheet of parchment paper and make them shiny and chrome with a generous spritz of edible silver mist. Let the silver spray dry while the pie bakes and then cools.
Once your purple Ube homage has cooled you can finally decorate it like Magneto’s favorite costume.
It’s easiest to think of your decorations as a countdown to destruction. Lay one disc at the 12:00 position and another at 6:00. Now put one at 3:00 and another at 9:00. You can also think of those anchor discs as the 4 major positions on a compass – North, South, East, and West.
Once you have your anchors in place, create a neat circle of silver rivets by filling in the rest of the positions on your mutant clock.
When you’re satisfied with the rivet positioning, carefully use your black icing pen to draw a circle about a finger’s width inside your ring of discs.
Microwave your cherry jam for 30-45 seconds. You want it to be easily spreadable, but not runny.
Magneto’s costume is purple and magenta. Use a spoon to spread the softened cherry jam in an even layer inside the black circle. You could up the color by using strawberry or raspberry jam, but honestly, cherry tastes best with the Ube.
Allow your fellow minions to admire your edible homage to Magneto. When you’re ready to penetrate his uniform, cut the pie into 12 slices, each one with a silver disc at the outer edge and a generous cherry jam interior.
